Lila Downs creció entre las montañas de Sierra Madre (Oaxaca) y Minnesota (EE UU). Comenzó su carrera musical a los ocho años. Sus primeros éxitos llegaron junto a Los Cadetes de Yodoyuxi y La Trova Serrana que le reportó gran popularidad entre el público latino de Estados Unidos gracias a canciones sobre la comunidad Zapoteca y sus valores culturales.
